The policing minister, Package Malthouse, has disputed the suggestion of the chief inspector of constabulary, Andy Cooke, that the price of residing disaster will trigger a rise in crime, branding it “old-fashioned” thinking.

Malthouse has instructed officers not to let shoplifters off if they are stealing food out of desperation throughout the cost of dwelling disaster.

He later told LBC, ministers would guarantee police don't flip a blind eye to shoplifters stealing meals.

“Actually I wrote to chief constables only a year or so in the past saying they shouldn't be ignoring these seemingly small crimes,” he stated.

Earlier, the minister advised Instances Radio: “The broad rule is that justice needs to be blind and I hope and believe that is the precept that sits behind not just the police but the operation of the courts as properly.
