Federal agents who went to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday to confront a gunman who killed 19 children had been advised by native police to attend and never enter the varsity — and then decided after about half an hour to disregard that initial steerage and discover the shooter, say two senior federal law enforcement officers.

In keeping with the officials, brokers from BORTAC, the Customs and Border Safety tactical unit, and ICE's Homeland Safety Investigations (HSI) arrived on the scene between midday and 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Steven McCraw, the director of the Texas Division of Public Security, mentioned Friday that Peter Arredondo, the chief of police for the Uvalde Consolidated Unbiased Faculty District, had stopped not less than 19 officers from breaking into the college because the gunman opened fireplace for at the least an hour. 

Arredondo believed that the shooter had barricaded himself and that the children were not under an energetic threat, said McCraw at a news convention.

“From the good thing about hindsight the place I’m sitting now, of course, it was not the precise decision. It was a unsuitable choice. Period. There was no excuse for that,” McCraw said. “There have been plenty of officers to do what wanted to be accomplished, with one exception, is that the incident commander inside believed he needed extra equipment and extra officers to do a tactical breach at that time.”

In line with McCraw, Arredondo believed there was no active risk, so instead of sending officers in, he spent time discovering keys that may let him into the varsity. Arredondo was not present among regulation enforcement officers standing with McCraw on Friday, and McCraw did not explicitly identify him.
