Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant stated its iconic music participant has been replaced by different units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "At the moment, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an incredible music expertise throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with help for spatial audio - there isn't any better technique to get pleasure from, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 player that could maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music player that lets you put your whole music assortment in your pocket and take heed to it wherever you go," he said on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again."

Similar MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony did not have the same success because the iPod.

Apple has released 5 versions of its music player - the Classic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with cell phone expertise enabling prospects to take heed to music providers on their telephones.

In 2014, the traditional click wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.
