Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Read’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It's a subject that is taken maintain in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Walk Two Moons" have been pulled from cabinets.

While those books is likely to be banned from some colleges, there is still someplace else you can find them.

"Our job is just to make sure that if you need it, it's right here for you," mentioned Public Data Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out right now," said Brown. "So we acquired extra copies on order but as soon as word obtained round about what happened in McMinn County, we received quite a lot of holds."

Those are simply some of the two million different supplies at the Nashville Public Library.

"Lots of people don't wish to read these books; they do not need their youngsters to need to learn these books, or pressured to learn these books, and that's fine," stated Brown. "However there are so much individuals who do, and we want to be there for the people who do wish to learn these supplies."

And if you want to make your love for these materials known, what better manner than with your library card? The 5,000 restricted edition playing cards for the marketing campaign say "I learn banned books."

"We all watch the TV reveals that we like; all of us watch the different sports or root for the completely different groups we're part of," said Brown. "Books aren't any totally different."

The goal is to get the 5,000 library playing cards within the palms of new sign-ups this month.

"We are not making an attempt to be a push back — a drive pushing back towards these choices — we want to be an alternative to say, should you could not be able to get it there... you will get it right here," stated Brown.
