Gary Martin, a senior at Archbishop Wood High College Warminster, Penn., broke a prestigious track and subject report on the Pennsylvania Catholic League Championship on Monday by running a mile in underneath 4 minutes. Martin's run broke a document that had stood for practically 60 years.

Martin ran a mile in 3:57:98 with out assistance from a pacer, breaking a report that had been set by Jim Ryun in 1965.

Ryun became the primary excessive schooler to run a mile in beneath four minutes in 1964, then broke his personal report 5 instances earlier than graduating. Ryun's time of file was 3:58.3, a mark which Martin broke by lower than a second.

"I might like to suppose that it's not loopy for me to say that it is a dream now," Martin instructed CBS Information. "Obviously, I'm nonetheless a long ways away and have some work to do, however I am assured in my ability. I have the dream, now I just have to put the work in and chase it."

Based mostly on his beating Ryun's mark, Martin's goals could very well be in reach. After his document run in the Nineteen Sixties, Ryun went on to compete in three Olympic finals, winning silver in 1500m throughout the 1968 Mexico Metropolis Olympics.
