Speaking within the dugout of the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler said, "I do not plan on coming out for the anthem going forward till I feel better concerning the course of our nation."

Later, Kapler wrote about his disillusionment with what he referred to as "the shortage of supply of the promise of what our national anthem represents."
"I'm not okay with the state of this country. I wish I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I want that I might have demonstrated what I learned from my dad, that whenever you're dissatisfied together with your nation, you let it be known through protest. The house of the brave should encourage this."

"When are we going to do one thing? I am drained. I'm so uninterested in getting up right here and providing condolences to the devastated families which might be out there ... I am bored with the moments of silence. Sufficient."
