The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk sent to Tesla's executive workers Tuesday, was first reported by electrical car information website Electrek.

"Anybody who needs to do remote work have to be in the office for a minimal (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is lower than we ask of manufacturing unit staff," Musk wrote, including that the office should be the employee's main workplace the place the other staff they often work together with are based — "not a distant department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally assessment any request for exemption from the policy, however that for probably the most part, "If you do not present up, we will assume you have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't reply to a request for comment on the coverage change, however Musk appeared to verify it in a tweet of his personal early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any additional remark to individuals who think coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They should pretend to work elsewhere."The policy is completely at odds with that of the opposite tech firm Musk is making an attempt to purchase, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously announced staff can continue to make money working from home "endlessly" if they prefer. "Wherever you are feeling best and creative is where you will work and that includes working from residence full-time without end," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a be aware to Twitter's nearly 100,000 workers in March, just before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that won't be the case. It is especially important that senior managers be seen within the office, Musk mentioned, including that was one of many causes he basically lived at the Tesla manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to extend production in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not accomplished that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are after all companies that don't require this, however when was the last time they shipped a fantastic new product? It's been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and can create and truly manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth," he added. "This won't happen by phoning it in."

Surveys show the majority of workplace workers want the choice to work at home. Since reopening places of work following Covid-19 shutdowns, many corporations past Twitter have introduced increased flexibility for employees who want to work remotely, partly as a technique to retain or appeal to expertise in a particularly tight labor market. However the world's richest individual does not seem concerned about that dynamic.
