16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty capturing that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive gadget materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to end in death or nice bodily harm.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School security remains a high precedence for the division," police stated in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our normal follow, maintained close contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we were assured that this individual didn't pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley High School community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action against the student. 

As well as, a city corridor meeting titled: 'Find out how to Discuss to Kids About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Schooling is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
