16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school capturing that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive system materials and threatening to commit against the law which will lead to dying or nice bodily damage.

Police said they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley High Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital items that might be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a high precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the varsity's community that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our normal apply, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we have been assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley High Faculty neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the scholar.
